Patrick Cantlay was the low amateur at the U.S. Open and has stayed hot, finishing 2 other PGA events

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Patrick Cantlay, who finished off his freshman year at UCLA by placing second in the NCAA Championship, copping low-am in the U.S. Open and fired an amateur-record 60 in a PGA Tour event, has been named the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for June. The remarkable June run by Cantlay, 19, resulted in his unanimous selection by the SGA’s blue-ribbon national Am of the Month panel. With a 4-under total of 212, the Long Beach, CA, teen finished just one stroke behind NCAA champ John Peterson in the first week of June at Karsten Creek in Oklahoma. After qualifying for the U.S. Open, he made the cut at Congressional CC outside Washington, DC, and finished as the low amateur with an even-par 284 total. A week later, he was an early leader in the PGA Tour Travelers Championship thanks to one round of 60, lowest ever by an amateur in a PGA Tour event. Then, in the final week of June, Cantlay became the first amateur in history to make the cut in his first three appearances in PGA Tour events by doing so in the AT&T National outside Philadelphia. Earlier winners of the award this year include Morgan Hoffmann, Alex Carpenter and Russell Henley. Winners of the National Amateur of the Month award, now in its ninth season, are chosen by a panel of golf journalists, officials and coaches. The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level, including staging of the storied Southern Amateur, which will be played for the 105th time next week at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa.
