Maletis, Wernick claim Golfweek Senior Titles
PALM DESERT, Calif. (April 20, 2011) -- Chris
Maletis (71-74-76---221) knocked off Doug
Pool (75-74-74---223) to hang on and win the
2011 Golfeek Senior Amateur at the Classic
Country Club.
Pool and Tom Studer were among the final
round contenders but Maletis' second-round 71
proved to be too much of a cushion for the
field to overcome.
Studer finished third after shooting 73-78-75---
226.
Bob Wernick fired a final-round 75 to close the
gap and win the Super Senior Division.
Wernick was seven shots off the pace after
Monday's first round but battled back with a 78
Tuesday and a 75 Wednesday to upend Bob
Fouke and Walt Martin, who both finished at
233 --- one shot back.
Wernick, Fouke and Martin had wiped away the
competition early on but the final three
remained very competitive even throughout
Wednesday's final round.
After a first-round 71, Martin was three shots
better than Fouke and seven better than the
eventual winner. A second-round 84 by Martin
evened out the trio a bit before Wernick's
spectacular final round.
