Karl Vilips of Stanford takes commanding lead at the Division I Men's Championship

In the team competition, Virginia leads by three shots, while Vanderbilt propels up the leaderboard

Karl Vilips wasted no time making his presence known in the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

The Stanford standout shot a 4-under 68 to get to 7-under and lead by five shots over the rest of the field.

Vilips started his round with an eagle on the par-5, No.10. After two pars on holes No. 11 and 12 and a birdie on No. 13, Vilips was 3-under through four holes. He also birdied No. 15 and 17 to shoot a 5-under 31 on his first nine holes. 

Vilips is coming off an individual win at the final Pac-12 championships and is currently ranked No. 14 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings

Adam Wallin of Ohio State and George Duangmanee of Virginia are T2 at 2-under. Jackson Koivun of Auburn, Jase Summy of Oklahoma, and Max Herendeen of Illinois are T4 at 1-under. Koivun recently won the 2024 Ben Hogan Award.

La Costa has shown its teeth this week, with only six golfers currently under par.

Hiroshi Tai of Georgia Tech, the first-round leader by one shot at 5-under, shot a second round 5-over 77 to fall to even-par and T7. Eight golfers are currently T7, including Gordon Sargent of Vanderbilt, who is ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings and shot a second-round 3-under 69. Seven golfers are T15.

Tai started his first round on hole No. 10 and birdied the par-5 No. 10. He turned to the front nine at 2-under and birdied holes No. 1, 2, 4, and 9 with a bogey on No. 5 to get into the clubhouse at 5-under.

Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech, who is ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, was forced to exit their lineup due to a back injury. He shot a 

In the team competition, Virginia continued its impressive team play, shooting a second-round 1-under 287 to take a three-shot lead heading into the third round of stroke play. Only three teams shot under-par rounds in the second round. 

Illinois is in solo second place at 4-over and three shots back of Virginia. Vanderbilt roommates Jackson Van Paris and Gordon Sargent lead the Commodores to one of the biggest jumps of the day, propelling up from 12th place to solo third place.

Auburn is in solo fourth place at 10-over, and North Carolina is in solo fifth place at 11-over.

Ohio State, Arizona, and Florida State are T6 at 12-over. Florida State jumped up the leaderboard 11 spots, and Tennessee jumped up the leaderboard 12 spots. 

All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, concluding tomorrow.

Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams, along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion.

The top eight teams, after 72 holes of play, will be placed into a bracket thereafter.
