Matthew Sughrue of Arlington, Va., won the thrilling 2024 Chanticleer National Senior Invitational at Greenville Country Club, Chanticleer Course, in Greenville, S.C., a tournament that came down to the final hole.

Sughrue shot 3-over to beat the field by one shot and carded rounds of 70-74-75 to secure the win.

Bob Royak of Alpharetta, Ga., finished in solo second place at 4-over and one shot back of Sughrue. Rick Stimmel of Pittsburgh, Pa., finished in solo third place at 5-over.

Jack Larkin Sr., of Atlanta, Ga., finished T4 at 6-over after a final round 10-over 82. Larkin entered the final hole with a two-shot lead, but a nine on No. 18 gave Sughrue the one-shot win. There is a pond in front of the No. 18 green, and Larkin saw his winning chances end after finding the water twice.

Claud Cooper of Birmingham, Ala., finished T4 with Larkin. Jack Hall of Savannah, Ga., and Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C., finished T6 at 7-over.

The final round conditions were difficult, with no golfers shooting even or under-par rounds on the third day.

Royak finished T5 at the Jones Cup Senior and in solo second place at the Gasparilla Senior and is currently ranked No. 1 in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings and was named the 2023 AmateurGolf.com Senior Player of the Year. Sughrue is ranked No. 12.
