History was made in the second round of the 2023 South Beach International Amateur at Miami Beach Golf Club and Normandy Shores Golf Course.
With winds averaging 20 miles per hour all day and gusts of 30 miles per hour, Miles Russell, the number one ranked amateur in the Rolex Ranking, shot a bogey-free 10-under 60 at Normandy Shores Golf Course to sit in solo second place.
Russell recorded 10 birdies through the first 16 holes and parred Holes Nos. 17 and 18 to just miss out on breaking 60. Russell's 10-under 60 tied the course record, previously held by PGA Tour star Adam Svensson.
Russell shot a first-round even-par 71 at Miami Beach Golf Club.
Michael La Sasso of Raleigh, N.C., and current Ole Miss golfer leads Russell by one shot, following up his first-round 5-under 66 at Miami Beach Golf Club with a 6-under 64 at Normandy Shores.
La Sasso recorded six birdies, one eagle, and two bogeys in his round. The eagle came on the par-4 No. 12, where he holed out for a two.
Florida star Quentin Debove of France is tied with Jack Wall at T3 at 9-under after firing a 4-under 67. Jack Wall, who plays for Texas Tech, shot a 5-under 66. Both golfers played their second-round at Miami Beach Golf Club.
Russell has had an incredible 2023, winning the AJGA Junior Player's Championship and the Boy's Junior PGA Championship. He was the youngest ever to win the Junior Player's Championship.
Russell also won the American Junior Golf Association’s Rolex Boys Player of the Year, topping Tiger Woods’ mark as the youngest winner of the honor given out by the prestigious junior association every year since 1979. Russell will graduate high school in 2027.
88 players made the cut, which was the highest number of players to make the cut in SBIA history. The cut fell at 1-over.
