Texas Tech's Jack Wall wins Genesis Collegiate Showcase
Texas Tech men's head coach Greg Sands (L) and Jack Wall
Texas Tech's
Jack Wall eagled the second playoff hole to defeat
Alex Goff of Kentucky and win the Genesis Collegiate Showcase on Monday at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Wall and Goff headed to a playoff after each player carded even-par rounds of 71 in the pro-am style event. After both players exchanged birdies on Riviera's iconic par-4 10th hole, Wall used his enormous power to reach the par-5, 583-yard 11th hole in two and drained his 25-foot putt for an eagle and the win.
“It was a good finish,” Wall said after his win. “I stayed focused during the playoff and, just to be in contention here and have the chance at a PGA TOUR start, I’m really proud of the way I handled the last couple holes.”
The win secures an amateur exemption to this week's PGA TOUR Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation along with a $50,000 donation for the Texas Tech men's golf program.
The 2023 Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase field featured 19 players representing 15 schools.
Gregory Odom Jr. of Howard University, the 2023 Collegiate Showcase Pathway Player, finished in a tie for third place with a round of 1-over-par 72.
The 2023 Genesis Invitational tees off on Thursday and includes 19 of the top-20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. The event also features the return of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods.
The opening two rounds of the Genesis Invitational will appear on ESPN+ (8:30-3 p.m.) with the afternoon portion (3-7 p.m.) appearing live on Golf Channel. ABOUT THE
Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase
The Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase was
founded in 2015. It is a chance for collegiate players
to play with PGA Tour alumni from their respective
schools. Two simultaneous competitions take place:
In the individual competition, the collegiate players
will play their own ball to record an 18-hole score.
When the Collegiate Showcase was founded, the
winner experienced the excitement of playing in the
Genesis Invitational that same week at Riviera. With
the status of the Geneisis Invitational changed to
"elevated" the showcase changed to awarding a
playing spot in the
Genesis Scottish Open, a co-sanctioned PGA TOUR &
DP World Tour event played in July.
In the team competition, the professional and the
two amateurs (playing at a specified percentage of
their most current and verified handicap) will team
up to play a best ball format (one-ball). The low
Professional and Amateurs team will take home the
Champions Trophy for their school and a nice check
going to their university's golf program.
