Hagestad charges into semifinals of the Crump Cup at Pine Valley
Two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion
Stewart Hagestad has won a lot of tournaments on some of the top courses in the world, including Seminole and Los Angeles Country Club-North.
He also won the Silver Cup as the low amateur at the 2017 Masters at famed Augusta National.
On Sunday, he'll have a chance to add Pine Valley Golf Club to his portfolio after the top mid-amateur in the world advanced to the semifinals of the Crump Cup being held at the world-renowned course in southern New Jersey.
Hagestad, the No. 2 seed in the championship bracket, will be joined in the semifinals of the championship division by
Jimmy Ellis,
Tug Maude and
Stephen Behr, Jr.
All four semifinalists won a pair of matches on Saturday to keep their championship hopes alive.
After defeating
Carlton Forrester, 4 and 2 in the morning, Hagestad downed
Garrett Rank, 3 and 2, in a battle between two of the top mid-amateurs in the world.
Hagestad will face Ellis in a semifinal match on Sunday, after the Venetia, Pa. native toppled 2014 U.S. Mid-Am finalist
Brad Nurski, 2 and 1 and
Gregor Orlando, 3 and 1. Earlier in the day, Orlando defeated No. 3 seed
Matt Van Zandt, 1 up, to advance to the round of 16.
Maude defeated a pair of former U.S. Mid-Amateur champions in
Nathan Smith (3 and 2) and
Scott Harvey (2 and 1) to advance to the semis.
After a 4 and 3 win over
Jeff Scohy, Behr, AmateurGolf.com's 2021 Mid-Amateur of the Year, had a tougher time with current Met Amateur champion
Bradford Tilley before prevailing, 1 up.
In the second flight, former Stocker Cup champion
Joe Sanders will meet
Jeff Osberg in the top half of the draw with the winner advancing to the final against either Robert Couture or
Drew Kittleson.
Andrew Price,
Bobby Leopold,
Michael Barbosa and
Charles Waddell make up the semifinals in the third flight.
Senior Championship Flight
Dan Sullivan upset top-seed former Crump Cup and U.S. Senior Amateur champion
Chip Lutz, 3 and 2 to advance to the semifinals against U.S. Walker Cup captain and current British Senior Amateur champion
Mike McCoy, who downed
Bob Royak, 3 and 2.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Englishman
Rupert Kellock is through to the semifinals after defeating
Dave Ryan, 3 and 2. He'll face
Tommy Brennan, who was a 4 and 3 winner over
Matt Sughrue.
John McClure,
Robert Gerwin,
Robert Funk and
Michael Kelley earned their spots in the semifinals of the senior's second flight.

The George A. Crump Memorial Tournament --
named
for the
hotelier and course architect most famous for
building
Pine Valley -- is arguably the premier mid-
amateur
event in the United States. The invitational field
is
made of of top players from around the United
States
and the UK. The format for the four days is two
rounds
of stroke play qualifying, followed by four
rounds
of
match play. Players are flighted according to
their
qualifying position, and a separate Senior flight
includes three of those flights. Jay Sigel has won
the
event the most times, with nine victories
between
1975 and 1993.
Normally, the public is invited to attend the Sunday
final matches but that tradition has been suspended.
