GCAA: Notre Dame's Tucker Clark survives marathon in Indy
Tucker Clark (GCAA)
61 holes of golf sounds like a great way to spend two days, no?
For Notre Dame’s Tucker Clark (Paradise Valley, Arizona), there was nothing better.
Backing rounds of 5-under 67 and 2-under 70 on Monday, Clark finished his third round with three bogeys over his final four holes to card an even-par 72. Despite stumbling down the stretch, Clark had an opportunity to redeem himself.
After the dust settled at Old Oakland Golf Club in Indianapolis, Clark was joined by UTEP’s Danny Daniels (El Paso, Texas), Miami of Ohio’s Danny Fisher (Lake Forest, Illinois), and fellow Fighting Irish teammate Andrew O’Leary (Norfolk, Massachusetts) who were all at 7-under 209 for a four-man playoff.
Heading back to the 18th where Clark was the lone man of the foursome to make worse than birdie on the hole in regulation, he saddled up and made birdie alongside O’Leary while Daniels and Fisher were eliminated with pars.
As chance would have it, the Notre Dame duo would live up to their school’s nickname. The two duked it out for six more holes before Clark was able to claim the win with a par on the seventh hole of the playoff, earning bragging rights over his teammate.
Even more remarkable that Clark was able to shake his poor play down the final stretch was that the birdie on the first playoff hole was his first birdie on the hole all week. The redemption must feel sweet and make for a fun drive back to campus.
