Having her 36-hole lead cut in half, the former U.S. Women's Mid-Am champion hangs on for unique win

Top amateurs from around the country flocked to Jupiter, Florida for the inaugural AGA Amateur Championship hosted by The Dye Preserve Golf Club. Taking a six shot lead into the final round on Sunday was 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Am champion and 2017 U.S. Mid-Am medalist Lauren Greenlief (Ashburn, Virginia). Paired with 2013 and 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Am champion Julia Potter-Bobb (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Chelsea Dantonio (East Aurora, New York), Greenlief was challenged by the duo through the front nine. Potter-Bobb was able to cut Greenlief’s lead to just two as Dantonio lurked just three shots back at three over for the tournament. Settling down following a double bogey on the par-3 7th, Greenlief put on cruise control with six consecutive pars on hole Nos. 8-13. Tallying a bogey on the 14th, Greenlief still had her lead in tact as the final group moved on to the final four holes. As Potter-Bobb stayed stagnant and Dantonio dropped another shot on the par-4 16th, Greenlief was crowned champion as the trio closed out the final hole as her 6-shot lead to begin the day was cut in half following a final round 3-over 75. In the senior division, Amy Ellerston (Free Union, Virginia) fell up the leaderboard with a final round 74 thanks to a final round 80 from 36-hole leader Gigi Higgins (Cape Coral, Florida). Ellerston’s rounds of 75/73/74 were good for a 6-over 222 and a two shot win over Higgins and the rest of the field.
