Kokomo native uses home-course advantage to shoot under his age en route to title

Kokomo, Indiana native Tim Miller began the final round of the Indiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship four shots off the lead. Two groups ahead of the overnight leader Steve Norris (Carmel, Indiana), Miller used home-course advantage to mount a comeback effort. Shooting two-shots better than his age during Thursday’s first round, Miller was 1-over carding a 71. Coming back on Friday, Miller used six birdies and one bogey to post a 5-under 65, good for the low round of the tournament. “I’m 73 years old, so I played pretty well for me,” Miller told the IGA. “I wasn’t too happy yesterday, but was proud of how I played today." As a member of Kokomo Country Club in Kokomo, Indiana, Miller without a doubt used his local knowledge to carve five birdies into his scorecard. “It makes it a little easier playing at home,” Miller said. “You know where the ball is supposed to be and it definitely helps with reading the greens a little better.” Miller did just enough to keep a surging Bob Jacobs (Valparaiso, Indiana) at arms-length. Jacobs, in the final group, was tied with Miller to begin the final round. Besting his first-round score by five shots, Jacobs carded a 66 to finish at 3-under for the tournament and one shot back of Miller. The win marks the third time Miller has hoisted the IGA senior amateur trophy. He was back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. “It’s very gratifying because I haven’t been playing in tournaments for a long time, so I was surprised,” said Miller. “It’s a lot of fun playing competitively because I’ve known these guys for years.” Jerry McMullen took home the super senior title with a 5-over 145, to win by two over Greg McCall.
