Oneill outlasts defending champ, among others, to win MAGA title

Mike Oneill started the second and final round of the Metropolitan Senior Amateur tied with defending champion Buddy Allen. Their days couldn’t have gone much differently, and as a result they went in quite opposite directions on the leaderboard. With a closing 2-over 74 at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill., Oneill claimed the title by one shot over Scott Edwards.
Allen, meanwhile, struggled to an 83 which included an uncharacteristic quadruple bogey on the final hole. He finished in a tie for 11th at 10 over. Allen was coming off a victory the previous week in the STLDGA Cassett Senior Championship.
For Oneill’s part, the second round was a display of steady golf with just a few closing stumbles. He played the front nine in 1-under 35 before making bogeys at Nos. 12, 16 and 17 on the back to reach 74. He was 1 under for the tournament.
Behind Edwards in second, David Johnson was solo third at 5 over followed by three men at 6 over in a tie for fourth: David Lucks, Scott Lambert and Tom Portner.
