SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 3, 2018) -- San Jose Country Club member Caleb Shetler etched his name in Silicon Valley history, winning the 92nd Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship.
The senior at Valley Christian HS -- and San Jose State University commit -- posted impressive rounds of 70-67-66=203. Shetler's final round 66 tied for the lowest round of the tournament. And as it turned out, and he needed all these shots to finish two strokes ahead of Mid-Amateur Steve Woods (the 1994 California State Amateur Champion) who played spectacular golf all weekend with rounds of 67-68-70=205.
Shetler started the final round two shots off the lead and made three birdies through his first seven holes to take the lead. He never look back.
Starting two groups in front of the leaders, University of California junior Finigan Tilly played his final ten holes in 6-under-par to finish in third place and San Jose State senior Sean Yu (the 2016 Champion) finished in fourth place.
SENIOR/SUPER-SENIOR
2011 Senior Champion and Northern California legend Casey Boyns shot 70-75=145 to hold off Thomas Ansbro who shot 72-76-148 in the Senior Division. In the inaugural Super Senior Flight, 2007 Senior Champion, Frank Pieper (his father is the legendary player Ernie Pieper who the tournament is named for) edged Herb Jensen by two shots with rounds of 77-73=150.
