MARICOPA, AZ (June 10, 2018) - Bryan Hoops (Chandler, AZ) won his second Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship in three years, with a three-shot victory at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The 49-year-old Hoops was the only player to break 70 in all three rounds, with consistent rounds of 68-69-68 on the par-71 course for an 8-under 205 total.
He started the final round two shots behind overnight leader Chris Kamin (Phoenix, AZ) who had fired rounds of 67-68. On Sunday, however, Kamin couldn't get anything going, losing 5 shots before making his first and only birdie of the day on the par-5 16th.
Hoops made five birdies on the day, including on on the final hole, to beat runner-up Jarrett Foote by three shots. Foote was seven shots behind going into the final round but shot a 5-under 66 to post 5 under for the tournament.
Zac Frazier (71), Travis Kalis (70) and Sean O'Donnell (69) tied for third at 4-under 209, with Kamin a part of a group of players tied for sixth at 3-under 210.
Brian Blanchard shot the low round of the tournament, a 6-under 65 that featured 8 birdies, to move up the leaderboard and finish 12th at 1 under.
It was the latest Arizona Golf Association state title for Hoops, who last won the Mid-Amateur in 2016 on the way to being named the AGA Player of the Year.
He started off the 2018 season with a win at the San Tan Amateur, making a late charge with birdies on the last four holes.
