Oklahoma State is on the verge of their fifth title of the year and second straight
LOS CABOS, NM (March 5, 2018) - With one round remaining at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate No. 1 Oklahoma State is on the verge of defending their title from a year ago, earning their fifth win of the season and second straight. Against a field that includes eight teams in the top-25, the Cowboys are 10-under and one shot in front of No. 15 California (-9).
Leading Oklahoma State through 36-holes at Los Cabos Querencia is medalist co-leader Matthew Wolff. Sitting at 9-under, Wolff started his round with eight straight pars before rolling in his first birdie on No. 9 to turn in a bogey-free 1-under 35. Following up a first round 6-under 65, Wolff struggled a bit early on the back nine with two bogeys and one birdie between Nos. 10-14 before rediscovering his form down the stretch with consecutive birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17. When all was said and done Wolff closed in 2-under 33 and signed for a 3-under 68.
Wolff, a freshman, has put together a strong rookie campaign but is still looking for his first career collegiate victory after twice sharing second.
Also inside the top-15 for Oklahoma State are Viktor Hovland (4th; -5) and Kristoffer Ventura (T13; E).
Joining Wolff atop the leaderboard is Cal junior Collin Morikawa. On Monday the 2017 Northeast Amateur winner backed up a first round 5-under 66 with a day two 4-under 67 that moved him to 9-under and into a share of the lead.
Morikawa, looking for his second career collegiate title, played nearly flawless golf rolling in six birdies while also carding a somewhat surprising double-bogey on the 13th.
Behind the Wolff and Morikawa in the medalist standings are Theo Humphrey (Vanderbilt) in third three shots back at 6-under, Hovland is fourth while Jamie Li (Florida State) and Alex Del Rey Gonzalez (Arizona State) are fourth.
The remainder of the team leaderboard top-five is comprised of Arizona State (-4) in third, No. 17 Texas (+3) in fourth and Florida State (+4) in fifth.
