QUEEN CREEK, AZ (February 18, 2018) - Bryan Hoops (Chandler, AZ) won the San Tan Amateur at Las Colinas Golf Club, overcoming a late 2-shot deficit with four straight birdies to finish his round.
The 48-year-old Hoops entered the day with a two-shot lead on the strength of a 7-under 64 on day one that included a 30 on his inward nine. But despite shooting under par on the front nine on Sunday, he found himself trailing 17-year-old Nick Hedman, who birdied five holes for a 31 that gave him the lead by two shots.
The lead was still two after Hedman and Hoops matched birdies at the par-five 12th and 15th, but Hoops got closer with a birdie on the par-four 16th. Then, on the medium-length par-3 17th hole, Hoops made a birdie 2 for the second straight day to pull even going to the final hole.
With Hoops carrying all of the momentum, Hedman blinked, making his only bogey of the tournament, and when Hoops registered his fourth straight birdie, he closed out another back-nine 30 and a two-shot win.
Scoring was low at Las Colinas, with Hoops finishing at 13 under after rounds of 64-65. Hedman shot 66-65 to finish second alone, while Brad Wayment shot 67-65 to finish third.
Grant Cesarek and Alexander Trevino tied for fourth at 8-under 134. In all, 21 players finished under par for 36 holes.
