Bill Roberts and Brad Kropp of Edmond, OK fire a final round 68 to win by 5
BANDON, Oregon (April 25, 2007) -- The third
time was the charm for Bill Roberts and Brad
Kropp.
The two players from Oak Tree Golf Club in
Edmond, Oklahoma entered the final round tied
with brothers Bill and Tim Liebe from St. Louis,
then fed off each other's solid play in the final
round in fashioning a 4-under 68 at Bandon
Dunes. Roberts and Kropp opened up a four
shot lead after six holes in the final round, as
they birdied Nos. 3 and 4 and the Liebe
brothers made three-straight bogeys on Nos.
4-6.
The Liebe brothers birdied the 7th and 8th
holes to get back to just 2-down, but gave
the strokes back just as quickly with bogeys at
10 and 11. When Roberts and Kropp birdied the
par-4 14th and followed with a rare birdie on
the par-3 15th, they took a 5 stroke lead into
the closing three holes. Thinking they might
need to birdie No. 18 to insure a victory over
the other teams in the division, Roberts and
Kropp got one there as well.
The Liebe brothers, for their part, may have
come in second in earnings, but as Tony Lema
once famously said after trailing Jack Nicklaus
on the money list, "came in first in spendings."
The team averaged over five birdies per day,
but spent those crucial best ball score-helpers
with several strings of bogeys and a team
quad on the par-3 2nd hole at Bandon Trails in
round two.
"We made 21 birdies and an eagle this week,
and we couldn't break par," remarked younger
brother Tim.
Senior Divisions field a record 22
teams:
The Senior Division, due to its size and age-
diversity, was broken up into a Senior and
Super-Senior Division, based on the median
combined age of the players. Everyone was
eligible for the overall title, which places their
name on the perpetual trophy, since all played
the same tees. As it turned out, first-time
players Mark and Robert Stuart from New York
won their division by 10-shots, and the overall
title by just 1. Mark, who goes by the
nickname "Buddy" has won the Winged Foot
Club Championship five times. The team posted
4-under with consistent play every day and a
fine score of 70 at Bandon Dunes in the final
round which allowed them to overtake
defending Senior Division champs Bobby
Forster and Stephen Friend of California, who
posted 73 on the last day for a total of 282.
Net Division: A lot closer than
everyone thought:
After Robert Bristow and William Strong of
Austin's Hill Country posted rounds of 61-59 on
the first two days, players were waving white
towels and begging for mercy. One team of
contenders, the father and son duo George
and Michael Stevens, never lost site of the
task at hand. Despite being 10 down at the
halfway point, they were playing steady golf.
In round three at Pacific Dunes George fired
the round of his life, a 74 that beat his age by
1. The team gained only 1 stroke on the
leaders after their third-straight 65, but picked
up another four on the final day with a 9-under
63 at Bandon Dunes.
Special Thanks:
The tournament was greatly enhanced by the
generosity of sponsors Bridgestone Golf, UST
Golf Shaft, Lamkin Grips, Fidra, and Bandon By
The Dunes Realty. We also appreciate the
excellent service by the entire staff at the
Bandon Dunes Resort. Things seem to get
better there every year. Finally, thanks for the
hard work and dedication of Tournament
Director Liz McQueen and Rules Official Bill
Biermann. We couldn't have the event without
you!
* * * In Memoriam * * *
The entire field was deeply saddened at the
passing of one of our tournament players,
Kenneth Ward of Houston, Texas. Mr. Ward
died on the golf course while playing an extra
round with his friends. He was playing the
game he loved with people he loved. To view
