From Nos. 10-15 during the final round at Richland Country Club Thornberry birdied five-times and eagled once to play the stretch in 7-under
NASHVILLE, TN (April 11, 2017) - On the day that Braden Thornberry turned 20-years-old he completed a dominating medalist victory at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate.
Thornberry posted rounds of 65-69-65 to finish 14-under and 13-strokes in front of runner-up Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb.
Leading by eight shots at the start of the final round at Richland Country Club it looked like Thornberry was just going to try and ease his round into the house. On the front nine Thornberry didn't do anything special as he parred eight-times and bogeyed once for a 1-over side.
However, things changed in a heartbeat on the closing nine and it all began with a birdie on No. 10. That birdie proved to be the first of five straight from Nos. 10-14 and then for good measure he jarred an eagle on the par-5 15th to play the six hole stretch in 7-under.
For the week Thornberry bogeyed just four-times while birdieing 17-times and eagling twice.
The title was the fourth individual victory of the season for the sophomore who also won the Jones Cup in February.
Despite the stellar play from Thornberry, it was host Lipscomp that won the team title with a 7-over showing. Armstrong, a member of the U.S. Walker Cup practice team, led the team with a 1-under showing.
No. 23 Ole Miss was second at 10-over and well in front of third place Chattanooga, fourth place Western Kentucky and fifth place Mercer.
