South Carolina commit Skylar Thompson went wire-to-wire in Girls Division

MYRTLE BEACH, FL (February 26, 2017) -- It was a wire-to-wire run to the Dustin Johnson Boys World Junior title for Trent Phillips. The Georgia commit turned in a 1-under 71 final round to post 5-under and finish six-strokes in front of runner-up Teddy Tetak. Starting the final day at TPC Myrtle Beach one shot in front of Tetak, all Phillips had to do as the rest of the field struggled was turn in a steady round of golf. On Sunday Phillips, the 2016 Palmetto Amateur winner, carded a four birdie, three bogey round of golf. Ben Carr and Aman Gupta at 2-over shared third while Logan Perkins was fifth at 4-over. Dustin Johnson Girls World Junior The Girls Division saw a wire-to-wire winner as well with South Carolina commit Skylar Thompson taking home the title. Thompson finished the week 5-over and well in front of second place finisher Smith Knaffle. Wint Phoo Aung was third while Emily Zhu and Natalie Petersen were fourth. ROUND TWO RECAP Georgia commit Trent Phillips wasn't as sharp during Saturday's second round but he still leads the Dustin Johnson Boys World Junior at TPC Myrtle Beach. Phillips turned in a second round 1-over 73 and he will begin the final round 4-under and one shot in front of the 3-under Teddy Tetak. On Saturday Phillips had an up and down day that included two birdies, including one on the 18th hole, an eagle on the par-5 6th, a double-bogey and three bogeys. It was the final hole birdie that allowed Philips to carry the lead alone into the final round. Tetak moved into second place with a 2-under 70. Despite triple-bogeying No. 10 and bogeying twice more, Tetak was able turn in his second consecutive red figure round thanks to two eagles (Nos. 6 and 18) and three birdies. Akshay Bhatia (-1) is in third, Aman Gupta (+1) is fourth while Jacob Bridgeman (+2) is fifth. Dustin Johnson Girls World Junior After sharing the first round lead South Carolina commit Skylar Thompson leads by herself with one round remaining. Thompson, even-par, used four birdies on Saturday to help her to the lead. Emily Zhu is 2-over and in second place, first round co-leader Natalie Petersen is still very much in the mix as she sits in third place at 3-over, Wint Phoo Aung is 5-over and in fourth while four others are sharing fifth at 9-over. ROUND ONE RECAP Trent Phillips opened the Dustin Johnson Boys World Junior at TPC Myrtle Beach with a 5-under 67 to take the first round lead. Phillips, 2-over through six holes, turned his day around by playing 7-under golf over the course of the final 12 holes. Phillips, the 2016 Palmetto Amateur winner, bogeyed the third and fourth holes before settling in and birdieing holes seven, nine, 12, 16 and 18 while also eagling the par-5 14th. In second place at 3-under is Aman Gupta while five others are sharing third at 1-under. Dustin Johnson Girls World Junior Pacing the Girls Division thus far is the 2-under duo of Natalie Petersen and South Carolina commit Skylar Thompson. Petersen reached the lead with a late rally. Starting on the 10th hole, Petersen was 1-over through 10 holes but rebounded nicely with three birdies over the course of the final eight holes. For Thompson it was a similar story. Thompson teed off on No. 10 and she was 2-over after seven holes before righting the ship to play flawless four birdie golf the reminder of the round. Four players will begin the second tied for third at 1-over.
