MIAMI, FL (December 19, 2016) -- Winds coming out of the east favors golfers at Normandy Shores Golf Club and means a crosswind that confounds the players at Miami Beach Golf Club and the first round scores reflected that. 19 of the 23 players who finished Monday's first round of the South Beach International 3-under-par or better played Normandy Shores.
The round of the day went to be co-leader, University of West Florida’s Chandler Blanchet. The Pensacola native’s 5-under 66 at Miami Beach set him up perfectly going into the second round at Normandy Shores.
Four 5-under 65’s at Normandy Shores tied Blanchet for the day one lead. Auburn’s Greyson Huff from Eagle, Idaho, UNLV’s Garrick Higgo from Stellenbosch, South Africa, Texas Tech’s Hurly Long from St. Leon-rot, Germany and Florida State’s Corey Carlson from Green Cove Springs, FL are all part of the first round share of the lead.
However, the conversation that will most likely be dominating the dinner time chatter tonight are the three hole-in-ones that were recorded. Carlson aced the 195 yard 17th hole at Normandy Shores while 17-year-old Julian Perico of Lima, Peru got his hole-in-one on the 205 yard 14th hole at Miami Beach. The trifecta was completed by University of North Florida’s Jordan Batchelor of St. Johns, Florida who recorded his ace on the 125 yard 6th at Miami Beach.
The five-year-old event had previously had just one hole-in-one before the remarkable three that were jarred on Monday.
Play continues Tuesday at both courses starting at 7:30 and admission is free for spectators. After tomorrow’s round 72 players plus ties will make the cut for the final two rounds to be played at Miami Beach Golf Club on Wednesday and Thursday.
