ATLANTA, GA (November 1, 2016) -- What a turn
around from Monday to Tuesday for defending
champion Washington. The Huskies simply put couldn't
get anything going during Monday's stroke-play
qualifying at the Women's East Lake Cup. As a result
Washington was slotted in as the four-seed and in a
rematch of last years NCAA Championship they had to
face top-seed Stanford who had bested them by 34-
strokes a day earlier at East Lake Golf Club.
Following a team discussion the Huskies came out
of the
gates reengaged and clicking on all cylinders and they
blitzed Stanford 4-1. They will face Duke, the three-
seed in Wednesday's final.
Monday's medalist winner Andrea Lee won the
opening
match for Stanford 5&4 over Eunwon Park but that
would prove to be their only point of the day. The young
Washington team would take control from there winning
the remainder of the matches. Husky victories went to
Ellen Takada (2&1), Julianne Alvarez (3&1), Sarah Rhee
(5&4) and Wenyung Keh (5&4).
"We had a really good team talk last night and
today
and a really good evaluation about what we needed to
do against Stanford," said Alvarez who clinched the
National Championship last year. "It was really honest
and we just specified what we needed to do today
against Stanford."
Duke moved on thanks to a 3-2 win over the two-
seed
UCLA. Bronte Law and Clare Legaspi got UCLA on the
board with wins in two of the first three matches but
Duke was able to rally late.
The Blue Devils received big wins in the latter two
matches from Olympian Leona Maguire (4&2) and Ana
Belac (3&2). Duke's first point on the board came from
reigning NCAA Individual champion Virginia Elena Carta
(5&3).
