BATH, MI (June 25, 2016) -- Sam Weatherhead captured the Michigan State Amateur Saturday with a 4 and 2 victory over Domenic Mancinelli at Eagle Eye Golf Club.

Weatherhead, a rising senior at Michigan State, entered match play as the 51st seed and upset each challenger he faced on his way to the trophy. Weatherhead knocked off two past champions in Hendry Do (2014) and Andrew Chapman (2013) along with University of Michigan golfer Reed Hrynewich 3 and 2 in the semifinals.

In the final match, Weatherhead and Mancinelli exchanged the lead back and forth to begin with and found themselves all square through 12 holes. The 13th hole was a turning point, however, as Weatherhead holed a 25-foot birdie putt and followed it up with a birdie on the 14th.

“After I rattled home that birdie putt on 13 was the point that propelled me forward to win that match,” Weatherhead told Lansing State Journal.

Starting at 13, Weatherhead would win the next four holes to close the match out.

“For as many rounds as I played, eight in five days, probably the best golf I’ve ever played,” Weatherhead said. “With that much packed into one week it was a great week. You definitely have to be at your best in a field like this to win.”
