John Hunter runs away with Greater Houston City Amateur

HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 5, 2014) — John Hunter never looked back as he recorded a nine-shot victory at the Greater Houston Men's Amateur Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course.

The 30-year-old, who plays out of Champions Golf Club, posted rounds of 68-67-71-69 for a nine-under-par 275 total.

Scott Loving of Conroe, who shared the first-round lead with Hunter, finished alone in second place at even-par 284.

Hunter had a six-shot lead after the second round, a four-shot lead after Sunday morning's third round and then boosted the final margin of victory in the afternoon fourth round.

The Top 10 finishers earned exemptions into the 2015 championship. Other exempt players are: Jess Bonneau (285), Devaughn Robinson of Pearland (287), Stephen Marland (288), Walker Lee, Matt Van Zandt, Eric Durbin,Tyler Beck and Andrew Minton, all of whom finished at 289.

Over the last month more than 600 golfers attempted to qualify for this Houston Golf Association event, which had a starting field of 144 representing over 60 golf courses and clubs.

ABOUT THE Houston City Amateur

72-hole stroke play championship, run by the Houston Golf Association that many people consider Houston's "Major" (with the feel of a PGA Tour event, including a cut to the low 40 and ties). Players must have permanent residency in the Greater Houston area which includes the following counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller. Non-exempt players must pre-qualify.
