Steven Chung earns low-amateur honors at Northern California Open
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2014) — In a tournament dominated by professionals Kyle Souza and Matt Hansen, Steven Chung impressed as an amateur in the talented field at the Northern California Open.
While Souza and Hansen tied for first at 20-under par, Chung tied for eighth place and was low-amateur at the event, held this year at Almaden Country Club in San Jose. Chung, who recently won the Antioch City Amateur, shot rounds of 71-67-69 and finished 11 shots behind the leaders.
Carter Pool of San Diego was second low-amateur, finishing in a tie for 12th place, shooting rounds of 72-67-71.
Souza and Hansen, once both prominent amateur players in Northern California, were not impressed with Almaden Country Club, averaging just under seven-under par over the three-round tournament. Souza shot the lowest round of the week — a 63 — on Tuesday before Hansen fired a 64 on Wednesday to come from two behind to tie Souza.
