College teammates Beck, Burton in hunt at Georgia Open
Jimmy Beck
KENNESAW, Ga. (August 2, 2014) — Mini-tour pro Jay McLuen has a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday's final round at the Georgia Open, but the story in the amateur golf world is Kennesaw State University teammates Jimmy Beck and Kelby Burton.
The pair have been in the hunt all week at Pinetree Country Club, conveniently in Kennesaw, Ga. at the site of last year's Georgia State Amateur — won by Beck.
Beck shared the opening round lead with current leader McLuen at 66, then shot 73 on Friday before his third-round 70 got him right back into it. In fourth place, Beck is five shots behind McLuen.
Beck's teammate Burton, of Evans, Ga., has been steady thus far, shooting rounds of 70, 68, and 72 to enter the final round at six-under in solo fifth place.
The 2014 NCAA National Championship participants are well-represented at this year's state open. Former Owl Matt Nagy, who has since turned pro, is tied for second place.
