NCAA Div. III: Rain halts third round
Editor's Note: Third-round play was
suspended due to rain and
thunderstorms. The
round will be continued Friday. With
roughly
half of the round complete, Schreiner
University remains in the lead.
GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 14, 2014) -- The
new kids on the block look to upset the
battle-
tested veterans at the NCAA DIII
Championship. So far, they are pulling it
off.
Schreiner University leads 2012 champion
Oglethorpe University by four strokes and
2013 champion University of Texas at Tyler
by
eight. In only the third appearance at the
national championship in the team’s
history,
they have taken control of the
tournament.
Junior Cheyne Kendall has paced the
Mountaineers this week, shooting
consecutive
rounds of 70, good for a tie for second.
Being held at the East and West Courses
of
the Grandover Resort, the layouts have
played
tough for the field but easy for 10th-
ranked
Brian Burt. Burt has played lights out for
Hampden-Sydney College, posting scores
of
67-69 to take a four stroke lead at eight-
under. He only has two bogeys for the
tournament thus far.
Martin Odegard of the University of
Dubuque
made a hole-in-one on the 12th hole of
the
East Course today, but not even an ace
could
keep his team from missing the cut. The
top
15 teams advanced to rounds three and
four,
with the cut coming at 23-over.
Palmer Cup selection Anthony Maccaglia of
Oglethorpe jumped from T62 to T16 today
with
a 70, but still stands nine behind the
leader at
one-over overall.
