Tight races in all divisions heading into the final round at Bandon Dunes
BANDON, Oregon (May 6, 2014) -- The second round of the Two Man Links Championship was played at Bandon Trails today. The fantastic Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw layout that starts by the ocean and winds through rugged Oregon terrain typically tests our players the most of any of the resort's courses, and today was no different.
That meant that the bunched up Net division (four teams shot 66 in the first round) isn't so bunched up anymore, and a change of positions put the Senior defending Champs Sherman Haggerty (El Dorado Hills, CA) and Ben Whipple of South Carolina in front of Canadians Brian McGuire and Paul Batchelor. Whipple and Haggerty fired the round of any of the divisions today, a 3-under 68. The pair reached an amazing 5-under (there are bogeys out here, trust us) before recording bogeys on the final two holes.
In the Championship division, Matt Fisher and Craig Courtney of Southern California still lead tournament organizer Pete Wlodkowski (Carlsbad, CA) and his partner Pete Davison of Connecticut, but their lead is a single shot now as an otherwise solid round was marred by a team triple on the "short but deadly" 14th hole.
Friends George Francisco, D.J. Lee, Charles Purse, and Randall Schwartz will make up the final group in the Net Division. Francisco and Lee followed their first round 67 with a 68 and even created a little excitement for the group in front of them when Lee's tee shot on the 270 yard (yes it is) par-3 12th hole rattled the pin. (We found out later it was his provisional, but amazing nonetheless.)
Schwartz (Burlingame, CA) and Purse (Connecticut) were the only team of the four who posted 66 in the first round to better 70 in round two. Their 69 at Trails sets up a nice shootout with their friends. But don't count out the Canadians Peter Butler and Hugh Tildesley, who are a stroke out despite Tildesley's bunker shot on No. 18 nearly leveling his partner. Back at 138, just three out, is the brother team of David and Lee Fishman of San Francisco.
The final round will be contested Wednesday at Bandon Dunes.
