Luke Vivolo shot 69 to win the Tour Championship while Jeff Britton and Vince Steele also won titles
Vivolo was a two-shot winner of Santa Clara golfer Evan McLeod, who shot rounds of 70-69--139. The red-shirt junior continued the success of UC Davis golfers in amateurgolf.com Tour events.
Hitting driver just four times over the course of the event, Vivolo focused on hitting fairways and greens over the tight and well- bunkered layout. He buried an eight-foot par putt on the 17th hole and made three birdies to secure the victory.
Shintaro Ban finished third at 141, also posting the same Sunday score of Vivolo, McLeod, and Nicolas Noya. In Noya's case, he jumped up the leader board into a tie for 8th by improving on his first round of 78 by a full 9 strokes.
Jeff Britton, 52, held on to the Senior Championship after holding off charges from amateurgolf.com's Pete Wlodkowski (who posted a final round 71 on top of an 83 but would have needed a Palmer-like 65 to contend) and Kenny Miller (who was the real threat starting the day 2 back).
Miller, playing with Britton, pulled to even with Britton deep into their round and showed some serious intestinal fortitude by "going for it all" with an attempt to hit the green in two on the tight par-5 9th hole, where if you don't pay a visit to the houses on the right you are likely to enter the cavernous hazard on the left where the chances of playing out are slim-to- none.
"I hit a cut three wood that didn't cut," quipped the Nipomo resident, whose ball found the aforementioned hazard. Britton's steady play (73-76 = 149) was good enough for a 4- shot win over Miller. And it could have been even better if not for the 2-stroke penalty he called on himself for playing the wrong ball on Saturday.
Amateurgolf.com Tour Net Player-of-the- Year Vince Steele backed up a strong year with a win. His 153 was good for a 5-shot victory over Chris Ladd.
