Luke Vivolo leads AGC Tour Championship
Carmel, Calif. (Dec. 21, 2013) -- Amateurgolf.com welcomed the beautiful Quail Lodge Golf Club into the fold today in the first round of our season ending tournament, the Tour Championship.
Championship flight players responded well to the well-maintained course's "precision golf" demands, and Luke Vivolo managed a fabulous 3-under 68 to pace them all. Vivolo, a UC Davis golfer and 2013 USGA Amateur qualifier from Carmel, has no doubt played with another local resident, Pebble Beach's Evan McLeod, who lurks 2 shots back at 70. They will see each other in Sunday's final round.
Three more players, Shintaro Ban (San Jose); Joey Russo (Monterey); and Sebastian Crampton (Pacific Grove) fired 1-over 72 and are well within striking distance.
In the Senior Division, Jeff Britton of Carmel played a nearly perfect round, a 74 that included an unfortunate 2-stroke penalty on his second-to-last hole (the 14th) when he mistakenly hit a nearly identical ball to his that was laying in the right rough just yards from his tee shot. Britton collected himself and nearly birdied the final hole. He leads by two over Kenny Miller, who made the trip up from Nipomo to compete.
Vince Steele of Concord leads Chris Ladd of Petaluma by a single shot at 78 in the Net Division as the two battle out for amateurgolf.com Tour player of the year honors. Tomorrow's final round is an 8:30am shotgun.
