Watson in control at Watson Challenge
Parkville, MO- Round 2 of the 2013 Watson Challenge began with players ready for another day to get their shot at the trophy. The early groups of the day would give spectators something to be excited about. Austin Conroy of Lee’s Summit, MO would fire a 4 hole birdie streak on the first four holes with Mike Tanner of Kansas City, KS just behind him with a birdie on holes 1,2 and 3. Joe Ida of Kansas City, MO made an eagle on second hole to start off his round. The course didn’t remain so forgiving leading into the later parts of the round however. Only two players would shoot under par for the day to finish the round on top of the leaderboard.
Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, KS shot a 73 for the day, placing him in third at the end of 36 holes. Norton was three under par leading into the 17th on the day, when he made a triple bogey. Norton remains at even par at the end of two rounds. Ahead of him, Sean Dougherty of Overland Park, KS shot one under par 71 on the day. Dougherty would bogey the 16th but held on to remain at one under par, placing him in second just behind the event’s namesake.
Tom Watson of Bucyrus, KS leads the field yet again with a total of four under par at the end of two rounds. Watson had gotten off to a bit of shaky start on the day, when he bogeyed the third, fourth and fifth holes.
“I made a couple careless putts today and missed two short putts,” said Watson. ” But I made two long 25 foot putts which made up for those missed putts.”
Watson fought back when he fired in for birdie on the 16th and 18th however and finished at one under par 71 on the day.
“I felt good on the 18th, “ said Watson, “knocking it in there three feet from the hole was a really nice way to finish.”
Watson leads the tournament at 4 under par with Sean Dougherty three strokes behind him at one under par. The final round of the tournament will begin tomorrow morning and in just 24 hours the 2013 Watson Challenge Champion will be named.
