Overton Charges to Win New Year's Invitational

St. Petersburg, FL - (January 9, 2005) -Indiana men’s golf standout Jeff Overton concluded his winter break with a come-from-behind victory at the New Year’s Invitational at St. Petersburg Country Club on Jan. 6-9. The senior shot a four-round 275 total (69-68-71-67) to overtake Adam Scrimenti by one shot.
Overton entered the final round trailing Scrimenti by six shots but came through with a final-round 67, as Scrimenti fired a 74, to capture the overall title. The Evansville, Ind., native also overtook Dalton Melnyk, who finished with 278 (72-65-70-71), on the final day.
The third-ranked golfer in Golfweek’s latest rakings also held off Kentucky senior John Holmes (282) and Vanderbilt star Luke List (283), who was a finalist at the U.S. Amateur Championships this summer. Overton was a semifinalist at the U.S. Amateur, losing to eventual champion Ryan Moore, 2 and 1.
