North & South Amateur: Down to Quarters
Village of Pinehurst, N.C. (July 3, 2008) -- Double rounds on Thursday at the 108th Men’s North and South Amateur left eight men standing – seven of whom went to the 17th hole or beyond to settle third round matches this afternoon.

Chief among them was Oklahoma incoming freshman Morgan Hoffman, who defeated Bud Cauley (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the morning match on the 27th hole, and then fired birdies on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th holes against David McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) to go 1 up. He would later birdie the 16th hole to go 1 up, when McAndrew missed his par put on the 17th to concede the match.

Duke rising junior Adam Long was up nearly the entire match against Scott Langley (St. Louis, Mo.), with a decisive 6&5 win. In spite of Langley’s birdies on holes 4 and 6, Long answered with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes of No. 2 to go 6 up and finish the match.

Other notables in the third round:

  • Hodge and Clemson’s Stanley played a close match that started with a bogey by Stanley on the 1st hole. Hodge would make birdie on the 4th, bogey of both the 6th and 7th, and then double bogey on the 9th while Stanley birdies the same hole to go to 2 up. Stanley birdied the 10th and 11th, but Hodge fired back with backtoback birdies at the 15th, 16th, and 17th to go 1 up. Stanley overshot the green on the 18th hole, gets it up and down to the green and holes a sevenfooter for a remarkable par; Hodge would miss his birdie putt to concede the match.
  • Lovemark made birdies on 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 to go 4 up at the turn; Byrd later answers with birdies on the 10th and 11th. Lovemark would birdie the 16th and 17th holes to finish the match at 2and1.
  • UNC’s O’Connell would answer Tringale’s chipin on the 13th with an eagle on the 16th par 5 to take the match to all square. On the 20th hole, O’Connell overshot the green on the 2nd hole of No. 2, chipped it past the hole by 10 feet and then sank the putt for par; Tringale would miss his par putt by inches to concede the match.
