ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. (Nov. 16, 2018) – It came down to a three-team playoff at the Senior Four-Ball Championship and the Columbus duo of Carter Mize and Wright Waddell birdied the first playoff hole (No. 9) to capture the title. The 2018 edition of the Senior Four-Ball Championship took place at King & Prince Golf Course while the Super Senior Four-Ball Championship was played at Sea Palms Golf Resort.
Mize and Waddell trailed by five strokes entering the final round but posted a 7-under 65 in the final round. They made seven birdies during the round including four in a row (Nos. 11, 12, 13, 14).
After three days and 54 holes, there was a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at 14 under between Gay McMichael/Phil Hardin, Jacob Davenport/Mike Nance, and Carter Mize/Wright Waddell.
Waddell made birdie on the first playoff hole to complete the come from behind victory. Mize and Waddell have teamed up to win four Georgia Four-Ball Championships (1991, 1995, 2003, 2004) and both are members of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.
Al Small and Larry Clark entered the final round tied for the lead and successfully defended their Super Senior Four-Ball title with a final round 7-under-par 64 to finish at 15-under-par overall. After posting a first-round 70, they posted back-to-back rounds of 64 to finish off the championship.
Don Marsh and Ernie Venet finished runner-up, five strokes off the lead at 10-under-par.
ROUND TWO
Gay McMichael and Phil Harden from Macon, Ga., sit atop the leaderboard in the Senior Four-Ball Championship after posting a 7-under-par 65 in Round 2. The 2018 edition of the Senior Four-Ball Championship is taking place at King & Prince Golf Course while the Super Senior Four-Ball Championship is being played at Sea Palms Golf Resort.
There are many former GSGA champions lurking near the top of the leaderboard in the Senior Four-Ball. Jeff Knox and Tripp Kuhlke put together another good round and sit two-strokes off the lead at 10-under-par. Chris Hall, who recently won his second Georgia Senior Championship title, is playing with Donny Phillips and they are at 8-under-par after two rounds along with three-time defending champions, Jack Hall and Doug Hanzel.
The Super Senior defending champions, Al Small and Larry Clark, went low in round two with seven birdies and an eagle on the par-4 12th hole. They are now tied for the lead at 8-under-par overall. Joining them atop the leaderboard is the team of Don Marsh and Ernie Venet.
There are seven Georgia Golf Hall of Famers competing this week: Bill Blalock ’19, Doug Hanzel ’19, Jeff Knox ’17, Carter Mize ’15, Spencer Sappington ’08, Jim Stuart ’11, Wright Waddell ’18.
ROUND ONE
On a windy day at St. Simons Island, former champions and Georgia Golf Hall of Famers sit near the top of the leaderboard. The 2018 edition of the Senior Four-Ball Championship is taking place at King & Prince Golf Course while the Super Senior Four-Ball Championship is being played at Sea Palms Golf Resort.
In the Senior Four-Ball Championship, the Augusta duo of Jeff Knox and Tripp Kuhlke led the way with a bogey-free round and seven birdies on the day. They posted a 7-under 65 and hold a two-stroke lead.
The three-time defending champions, Doug Hanzel and Jack Hall, sit at T-6 after posting a 3-under-par 69. Hanzel is just two days removed from partnering with another Georgia player, Bob Royak, and qualifying for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.
The Super Senior Four-Ball Championship also saw low scores from some familiar faces. Don Marsh and Ernie Venet piled up five birdies while posting a 5-under- 66 during their round. They are tied for the lead with Bob McClearen and Bob Young.
