In France, U.S. Extends Lead at the Arnold Palmer Cup

ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (July 7, 2018) - The United States claimed eight of 12 four-ball matches to extend its lead to 20.5-15.5 at the Arnold Palmer Cup at Evian Resort Golf Club. Team USA needs 30 points to retain the cup while the Internationals require 30.5 to reclaim it.

The International side looked in control early in the round. The Italian pair of Stefano Mazzoli and Lorenzo Scalise tied the overall team score with a 4&3 victory. The U.S. would retake the lead following a 2&1 win by Jennifer Kupcho. The Internationals claimed their first lead of the matches with 5&4 and 5&3 triumphs from KK Limbhasut/Alvaro Ortiz and Wenyung Keh/Patty Tavatanakit, respectively.

The Americans would take the next two matches - victories by Sophia Schubert/Lauren Stephenson and Shintaro Ban/Collin Morikawa - to move ahead 15.5-14.5. Olivia Mehaffey and Maddie Szeryik earned the final International point of the day, winning 1-up. Team USA would win the last five matches of the day to move ahead 20.5-15.5.

Sunday’s final round singles matches tee off at 7:30 am on Nos. 1 and 10.

SATURDAY MORNING RECAP

The United States holds a 12.5-11.5 lead following the morning mixed foursomes matches at the Arnold Palmer Cup at Evian Resort Golf Club. The International side entered the round trailing by four points but claimed 7.5 of the morning’s 12 points.

South Africa’s Jovan Rebula and Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela claimed the day’s first point with a 4&2 victory. The two sides would halve the next two matches. Team USA would then claim three of the next four matches to push its lead to 12-7.

The Irish duo of Ronan Mullarney and Chloe Ryan would spearhead the International comeback with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to win 1-up. England’s Harry Hall and Wenyung Keh of New Zealand posted a 3&1 result along with a pair of International 2-up wins to cut the lead to one point. The United States SM Lee and Kaitlyn Papp would rally back from 3-down thru 11 to halve their match against Jaravee Boonchant of Thailand and Sweden’s Fredrik Nilehn to preserve the American’s lead.

Afternoon four-ball matches tee off at 1:30 pm on tees No. 1 and 10.

ABOUT THE Palmer Cup

The annual Ryder Cup-style competition features top men and women collegiate players from the United States against their International counterparts.

Each team will be comprised of 12 men's and 12 women's golfers. Day one will feature Mixed Four-Ball competition, day two will see Mixed Foursomes in the morning and Four-Ball in the afternoon, with 24 singles matches on the final day.
