The victory for Duke was their second of the year after spending much of the last few months knocking on the door
BATON ROUGE, LA (March 26, 2017) -- A golf shot wasn't hit on Saturday at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic due to inclement weather but the day off didn't faze Duke one bit. Leading by 13-strokes at the start of play on Sunday, Duke didn't take their foot off the gas and with a 5-under final round they defended their title and picked up win number two of the year.
With a 10-under week Duke blitzed the field at The University Club finishing 18 shots in front of Oklahoma State (+8), Arkansas (+9) was third while North Carolina State (+16) and Denver (+16) shared fifth.
Leading the way for Duke throughout the weekend was World Amateur Golf Rankings No. 1 Leona Maguire. On Sunday the junior picked up her first outright title of the year as she combined tallies of 67-68-71 to post 10-under and win by four shots. Her double-digit under-par showing was just the fourth in tournament history.
In the final round Maguire didn't do anything spectacular as she birdied four-times, bogeyed once and double-bogeyed once. Maguire rolled in three of her birdies from Nos. 11-15.
In each of their last four tournaments Duke has been knocking on the door and they were finally able to break into the win column thanks to contributions from everybody in the lineup. Virginia Elena Carta finished second at 6-under, Gurbani Singh was tied for 16th at 4-over, Ana Belac was tied for 22nd at 7-over and Sandy Choi was tied for 47th at 14-over.
Behind the two Blue Devils at the top of the individual standings are Cara Gorlei of Arkansas at 3-under in third, Oklahoma State's Kenzie Neisen was fourth at even-par while India Clyburn of NC State; Maria Fassi of Arkansas; Maddie McCrary of Oklahoma State shared fifth at 1-over.
Note: Due to poor weather on Saturday the teams played 36-holes on Friday and then had a scheduled day off on Saturday
