It's safe to say that Alabama enjoys playing in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (March 5, 2017) -- It's safe to say that Alabama enjoys playing in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Since the event was first played in 2012 the Crimson Tide, with their win on Sunday, have won the event held at Long Cove Club four-times in six years.
No. 5 Alabama started the day tied with two-time event champion Duke before creating just enough separation with a 2-over day that pushed them to a two shot victory at 7-over.
Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was another repeat champion in sophomore Cheyenne Knight. One shot off the lead to begin the day, Knight fired a career-best 6-under 65 to post an 8-under tally.
Knight, the winner by seven, played a flawless round of golf with birdies on the 5th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 15th and 16th holes.
36-hole leader and Knight's teammate Kristen Gillman ended up in fourth at 1-over. Gillman, a freshman, could never get things going during the final round on her way to a 4-over 75 that followed days of 68-71.
Sophomore Lauren Stephenson was the third member of the Crimson Tide to turn in a top-10 showing. Stephenson, a transfer from Clemson, posted a 5-over week that put her in tie for ninth.
Behind Knight in the individual standings comes Linnea Strom (Arizona State) at 1-under in second place, Sophia Zeeb (Arizona State) in third at even-par, Gillman was fourth and Sandy Choi (Duke) was fifth at 2-over.
World Amateur Golf Rankings No. 1 Leona Maguire of Duke ended up in a tie for sixth at 3-over.
The team top-5 of the team standings was rounded out by No. 18 Duke (+9) in second, No. 10 Arizona State (+13) in third, host and No. 14 South Carolina (+24) was fourth and No. 8 Georgia (+28) placed fifth.
Alabama has now won the event in 2012, 2013, 2016 and of course 2017.
