FAR HILS, New Jersey (November 29, 2016) -- Callaway has had a good run over the last few years under the leadership of CEO Chip Brewer and laser-focused R&D and marketing departments.

And for the tournament players who spend time on AmateurGolf.com, Callaway clubs are increasingly part of the equation when it comes to looking at equipment. Apex, and Steelhead irons, MP3 wedges, XR and Great Big Bertha drivers have all been very successful at retail, and we see them in player's bags at tournaments and in casual rounds.

Three new drivers have just appeared on the USGA conforming list. We don't have any official product release information from Callaway, just these images and some corresponding trade names like "Jailbreak" shown on the conforming list documents on the USGA website.

So we'll take a few guesses at what the GBB models called "Epic," "Epic Star" "Epic Sub Zero" might be packing under the hood. But please keep in mind that until these products are launched, it is completely unofficial.

GBB EPIC AND EPIC STAR

The Epic and Epic Star as both have “Jailbreak Technology.” It's a term popular among iPhone enthusiasts who install their own version of software to unlock features that aren't accessible with the iOS software offered by Apple. So perhaps the name is a nod to Callaway's ability to "unlock" some combination of flight-enhancing technology that has never been available. Whatever the case, it's some pretty good marketing. The one two R&D/Marketing punch we have seen over and over again from the company.

Callaway has patents in place that indicate that the plugs you see in the photo are actually the bottom of two bars that run from the sole to the top of the club, behind the face. Like bars in a jail cell, get it?

Not new, but obviously effective (since it's carried over from some previous models) is a sliding weight to tune in a draw, fade or neutral ball flight bias.

All three models show extensive use of carbon fiber on the sole which is likely related to the allocation of weight to move the weight to the places it's most effective. Or maybe to allow for the extra weight of the jailbreak bars.

GBB EPIC SUB ZERO

The GBB Epic Sub Zero replaces the sliding weight with two adjustable weights similar to the XR ’16 Sub Zero driver, That model is designed for high spin players. Callaway never subscribed to the "one driver fits all" marketing applied by at least one of its competitors, so it's not surprising to see three versions of the same product targeted at different players, especially with the increasing availability of knowledgeable club fitters.
