Four LSU players share medalist honors at The University Club
BATON ROUGE, LA (October 9, 2016) -- It was all host school LSU as they ran away with their second straight David Toms Intercollegiate. The Tigers ranked fourth in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll finished 11-under-par and well in front of second place North Texas at The University Club.
“This golf course played as hard this weekend as it has ever played for any of our events,” LSU coach Chuck Winstead said. “It was firm and fast and the wind blew 10-15 miles per hour. The hole locations were as challenging as ever. Yea, when you have four guys finish at the top … I’ve never seen that done. I’ve never had a team have that happen and I’m very proud of the guys. All fall they have had the right mindset and the right kind of edge about what they want to accomplish. So it’s always fun when you work hard and the guys can see that kind of success.”
LSU was paced by a quad-medalist winners, who all finished 1-under. The group included senior Brandon Pierce (66-76-73), senior Eric Ricard (71-75-69), sophomore Luis Gagne (73-69-73) and sophomore Sam Burns (72-76-67).
Burns reached 1-under with the round of the day, a 5-under 67. The 2016 PING Honorable Mention All-American began on the 3rd hole and promptly birdied three of his first four holes to move to 2-over for the tournament. Burns lost a shot with a bogey on the 10th but he was able to get that stroke back and more with an eagle two on the 12th before rolling in a 17th hole birdie, his final of the day.
The top-five team standings were completed by McNeese State in third, South Alabama in fourth and Louisiana Tech; Louisiana in fifth.
