GASTONIA, NC (September 13, 2016) -- Defending Carolinas Senior Amateur champion, Pat Thompson of Asheville, NC, continued his great playing shooting a second round 1-under, 71. “I made a few mistakes out there today by bogeying a couple par fives but I didn’t let that effect the rest of my game," said Thompson about his second round at Gaston Country Club.

The first round co-leader will head into the final round with a one shot lead over Doug Owens of Albemarle, NC and Phil Bland of Waynesville, NC.

No stranger to the winners circle Thompson is looking to finish strong, “I really haven’t had a great year, I asked Paul (Paul Simson) for advice and he turned me to a book called ‘The Inner Game of Golf’ and it has helped. I plan on staying in the moment, I know that’s cliché but it has really helped me to think that way.”

Bland, who was tied with Thompson at the start of the day, got off to a rough start with an outward nine of 39. After four birdies on the back nine, Bland finished the day at 72 placing him in tomorrow’s final grouping.

Rounding out the final group is Doug Owens. Throughout the week Owens has played steady golf and he has been able to keep the high numbers off his card, as he has yet to make higher than a five, while making eight birdies in two days.

Low round of the day went to Preston Edmondson of Cary, NC who finished birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to shoot 68. Edmondson will be paired with first round co-leader Harrison Rutter of Winston-Salem, NC. Rounding out that grouping is two time Carolinas Senior winner, Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC. The three are sitting three shots back. Also three shots behind are Ernie Newton of Winston-Salem, NC and Eddie Hargett of Blythewood, SC.

The cut line fell to 9-over-par (153) after two days. 63 players will tee it up tomorrow in the final round starting at 8:00 a.m. EST.
