ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Jan 10, 2016) -- After 72-holes of regulation play, it took a four way playoff to settle the score at the New Year's Invitational.
Jimmy Jones began the final round four shots back of the third-round leader Joe Alfieri and put up a solid 2-under par 70 to finish at 9-under. Jones, a sophomore at Florida Southern, would find himself in a four-way playoff with Jimmy Stanger, Andrew McCain and Joey Lane.
"I was hovering around the lead all day," Jones told Tampa Bay Times. "It was a pretty consistent round. Overall, it was a good day."
All players made par on the first playoff hole and Jones found himself with a 6-foot birdie try on the 2nd playoff to take the title. It found the cup.
"I just wanted to put a good stroke on it," Jones said. "I'd made a million of those putts before."
Joe Alfieri backed up to fifth place after a final-round 75 but the Tampa native did capture the Mid-Am championship. Marc Dull was the Mid-Am runner-up.
Dennis Monahan grabbed the Senior Championship with a five-shot victory over runner-up Mike Barkley.
