Kanaya won the Mark McCormack medal as top amateur in the WAGR in 2020. He missed the cut by a shot in the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, and decided to turn pro shortly thereafter. He will enjoy exempt status on the Japan Tour through the end of 2021 based on being the fourth amateur to win one of that tour's events, in November of 2019.
