Garrett Brown successfully defends Worsham Memorial title
Garrett Brown, from Crofton, became the fifth successful defender of a Bubby Worsham Memorial championship when he was the last man standing at Glenn Dale Golf Club, July 29. Brown, the only player in the final-round 14-man field with two rounds in the 60's, finished with 74-66-69--209, 2 over par for the 6,197-yard course played to a par of 35-34--69.

For almost all of the last round, Brown was locked in a struggle with second-round co-leaders Tyler Koch, the current Metropolitan Schoolboy titleholder, from Issue in Southern Maryland, and Spencer McGladry, Damascus, who started the day one stroke in front of Brown, who had vaulted into contention with a best second round of 66.

Brown, 20, a rising junior at Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, dipped 1 under par on the front nine to tie Koch, 17, a rising senior at La Plata High School, and lead McGladry, 18, a Good Counsel graduate headed to Clemson University, by one. Brown then doubled 10 to slip back, but two birdies got him back in the hunt. McGladry was the first to waver with a double-bogey at 17 and Koch followed suit at 18. The result left Koch two behind with 69-70-72--211, followed by McGladry at 71-68-73--212. For his round, aside from his four-putt, Brown included four birdies, two bogeys.

The winner joins Ron Righter (1959-60), Jimmy Cangiano (1991-92), Jason Cage (1998-99), and Jay Mulieri ((2008-09) as a repeat champion.

John Hulede, from Bowie, the 2012 winner, shared the day's low round with Brown, including five birdies in his round of 69 (216 total). Other low scorers in addition to Hulede were former Ricketts winner Brian Norwitz (75-68-73--216), former Ridgway titleist Mikey Barillo (72-71-74--217) and first round co-leader Mike Filler (69-77-72--218).
