NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (July 28, 2015) -- 156 of the best Amateurs and Professionals in Kentucky teed it up at Keene Trace Golf Club | Champions Course on Tuesday, July 28. It promised to be an exciting Championship, featuring a little bit of everything that golf has to offer from talented junior amateurs to former Champion Senior Professionals. After a day of finishing play at the last light of the sun, the leader board continued the trend of giving Kentucky golf enthusiasts a sample size of all facets of the field. This was all done on a fantastic site in the Champions Course and its treacherous greens were out in full force in round one.

Play for the morning wave of players was under sunny, hot and humid conditions. A few dark clouds and rumbles of thunder were seen off in a distance, but never materialized over the course. Scoring was prime and three players finished their round at 5-under-par 67. Andy Roberts, the 2010 Kentucky Open Champion, showed that he is still one of the top Mid Amateurs in the state. The Owensboro golfer carded four birdies and an eagle on his round. Joining him was Austin Squires of Union. Squires is a University of Cincinnati Bearcat-to-be and just finished his senior year at Ryle High School. Georgetown native, Billy Tom Sargent is the third name atop the field. The Western Kentucky University golfer and two-time “Mr. Golf” had a round similar to Roberts with four birdies, an eagle and bogey to highlight his card. These players are followed closely by Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur Champion Logan Hogge of Salt Lick and Weissinger Hills Assistant professional, Daniel Iceman, III – who both carded rounds of four-under-par 68. Hogge posted his round early in the day. Iceman played in the afternoon where conditions were windy, cooler and featured a 90 minute rain delay.

Six players find themselves three shots back after two-under-par rounds of 70: Rob Petrey, Kent Bulle, Robert Damron, Joseph Deraney, Brian Fister and Nick McCarthy. Rounding out the under par competitors with rounds of 71 were J.B. Williams, Evan Cox, Trey Shirley and Blake Hamilton.

We are looking forward to an exciting second round, after which the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties. Like in the first round, 9-Hole scores will be updated throughout the day. - See more at: http://kygolf.org/96th-kentucky-open-underway/#sthash.AARn7EmP.dpuf
