Taylor Lewis takes lead at Chattanooga Choo Choo
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Three players entered Tuesday's second round of the Chattanooga Choo Choo Invitational tied for the lead. That same trio of golfers are still atop the leaderboard, but separated by a stroke each as Taylor Lewis posted a bogey-free 66 at Council Fire Golf Club to take the lead on his own entering the final round.
Lewis, a mid-amateur player from Chattanooga, posted 34 on the front nine before rattling off three straight birdies on holes 11-13, and capping off his second round with a birdie on the 18th to shoot 66.
Lewis' score would have been the lowest round of the tournament thus far if it weren't for the impressive showing, and recovery, on day two from Southern Miss senior Tyler Peggs. The Germantown native managed to post a score on Tuesday 15 shots lower than his opening round — a bogey-free 64 that concluded with an eagle at 18.
Though 10 off the lead, Peggs is now inside the top-20 in a tie for 17th place at 1-under par.
The other two first-round co-leaders, University of Tennessee junior Jack Smith and University of Tennessee-Martin sophomore Hunter Richardson, are one and three shots back of Lewis, respectively.
Smith, a native of Knoxville, fired his second consecutive round of 67 to grab second place while Richardson, of Clarksville, is in third place after birdieing three of his last six holes to post 69.
Wesley Gosselin and Tyler McDaniel share fourth place at 7-under par, while Chase Harris sits in sixth place at 6-under.
