BRADENTON, Fla. — Stanford women's golf captured their first NCAA National Championship on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Baylor at The Concession Golf Club.

The decisive match came in the final group as No. 1 players Mariah Stackhouse (Stanford) and Hayley Davis (Baylor) matched up against one another with Stackhouse prevailing in 19 holes.

“At the end of the day, I couldn’t envision having anyone else in that anchor spot than Mariah,” Stanford coach Anne Walker told Golfweek.

Stackhouse fought back from a two-stroke deficit on the 17th tee to force the extra hole, which led to her winning the National Championship for the Cardinal with a par.

Also cashing in victories on Wednesday for the winning squad were sophomore Casey Danielson and freshman Shannon Aubert. Danielson handled Laura Lonardi two-up while Aubert defeated fellow freshman Lauren Whyte 4-and-3.

Stanford came close in 2000 when they were runners-up to then Pac-10 rival Arizona, but 15 years later, are bringing home the program's first national title.

Both Stanford and Baylor reached the final by knocking out the champions from the past two years in the semifinals as Stanford defeated in-state rival USC, the 2013 winners, while Baylor ended Duke's chances of repeating.
