Straight Down Fall Classic: Doug Garwood and Joe Benedetti win it
SAN LUIS OBISPO, California (November 16,
2014) -
- In an area known for its wine, beautiful Fall
weather, and of course as the headquarters of
apparel company Straight Down, the "Fall
Classic" has become a favorite event for club
and tour pros to wind down with every year.
This year's stable of pros was one of the
tournament's best -- in addition to perennial
visitors
like Fred Couples and Tom Lehman, there were a
number of other recognizable names including
Tom
Weiskopf, who paired with Straight Down owner
Mike
Rowley.

Doug Garwood, who last year at this time had no
status and had, as he told PGATour.com bounced
around on “pretty much every mini-tour
around the country” -- partnered with
amateur Joe Benedetti to win, posting 18-under.
Garwood capped an amazing season that saw
him
lose to Tom Pernice (who also made an
appearance
here) in a playoff and finish 28th on the money
list.
He's one of the rare stories of a player who
never
played a PGA Tour event breaking out to become
exempt on the Champions Tour.
Finishing second was injury-plagued PGA Tour
standout Arron Oberholser (nice to see him
back)
and Jim Strickland by a single shot.

ABOUT THE Straight Down Fall Classic
Annual invitational event sponsored by apparel
manufacturer Straight Down and supported
by sponsor companies from the California
Central Coast.
Format is one pro, paired with one amateur
-- pros are PGA Club pros and members of
various professional tours with enough "big
names" to bring out thousands of spectators.
And the spectators are rewarded with up-
close access normally not found at a PGA
Tour event. The
ALS Foundation was named as the
designated beneficiary in 2009.
