WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 30, 2014) — Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor, N.C. came from two shots behind to win the 7th North Carolina Super Senior Championship with a two-day total of four-under 140.

Carpenter fired matching rounds of 70 while first round leader Bob Yow of Clinton, N.C. shot a three-over par 75 and finished three shots back in a tie for third.

Defending champion Rick Luzar of Pinehurst, N.C. posted a two-day total of three-over 147 and finished in a tie for 17th.

“It was a fairly comfortable round.” Carpenter said of the day, “there were still about twelve guys that could have won”.

There were 17 golfers within four shots of the lead after the first round, but Carpenter hit 17 greens in the final round and was able to play from the rough when others players had trouble.

“Anytime I was in the rough I had nine-iron or less, and I was able to get the ball out.” Carpenter on Cape Fear Country Club, “I love this course and always enjoy playing here.”

Carpenter just turned 65 in August and this was his first appearance in a Super Senior Championship; he also won the Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship in April with partner Gary Brown.

Over 36 holes, Carpenter carded eight birdies and four bogeys and won by two strokes over Ernie Newton of Wallburg, N.C. Five players finished the championship under par.
