Catlin wins 2nd straight Memorial Amateur
John Catlin
CARMICHAEL, Calif. (May 28, 2012) -- John Catlin continues his stellar play in Monday's final round, taking the 2012 Memorial Amateur Championship by five strokes for the second straight year.
Catlin, who plays out of Ancil Hoffman Country Club, the event's host course, fired final-round 2-under 68 to win easily.
Andrey Bevins of Wild Hawk was alone in second place, putting together scores of 68, 69 and 70 over the course of the three-day event. Niall Platt of La Cumbre Country Club was third after a final-round 71 following a 68 and 70 in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Catlin opened up with a first-round 68, which put him atop the crowded leaderboard alongside Bevins, Platt, Austin Smotherman and Sebastian Vasquez. His second-round 4-under 66, however, was the round of the tournament and it gave him a two shot lead over Smotherman entering the final round. A solid showing in the final round was enough to give Catlin his second straight Memorial Amateur title.
Eli Cole, Jonny Baxter, Eric Taylor, Smotherman and Vasquez all finished in a tie for fifth place, finishing the three-day event at 1-over, 211.
